When I am not blogging about saw palmetto or doing work, sometimes I am watching movies that people recommend. Often while drinking trappist ale from Belgium. Tonight I was out of ale, but I watched this film a friend recommended called “Kill List.”
I am not quite sure what to think of this film. It’s really good, until the end when it turns into a British version of “Eyes Wide Shut” except it makes even less sense then its’ American predecessor. I mean, some films attempt to force you to think instead of making you think when the film is over – and this is one of those films that tries to force it by just confusing the hell out of you. I suppose it took too much effort to get real writers and such?
The next film on my list is “Ichi the Killer.” This is something I normally wouldn’t watch because I consider it a “degradation” film. I don’t appreciate films that have the specific intent to degrade human existence. Films like Kill List are extremely violent, but it is within the context of a story – and even more importantly… there is character development which is the most important thing to me.
However, I will make an exception for Ichi, because my MMA teacher said it is the best film out there to understand the Japanese mind. He lived in Japan for years, so he must know. Naturally, the notion that such a film is a reflection of any culture’s mind is really unsettling, but given the Japanese treatment of American POWs during WW2, it is plausible indeed.
